Expand the scope of your ceramic craft in an engaging workshop that invites you to explore the possibilities of prototyping and pattern making ceramic objects. Slip casting and press molding into molds is both an ancient and modern industrial production technique used for replicating pottery forms, generating multiple and modular sculptural parts, and creating unique discrete objects. Handmade patterns and digitally produced 3-D models for mold making provide artists with an infinite variety of ways to create forms and surfaces in clay.

Media & Techniques:

The production of patterns and the creation of plaster molds are the primary technical focuses of this course. Students learn to develop models using the potter’s wheel, folded sheet materials with an introduction to digital model production using the 3-D printer, and laser engraver. Participants mix plaster and create both simple and multi-part molds. Detailed plaster molds allow us to develop both form and surface patterns. We apply our knowledge and tools to create slip-cast and press-molded ceramic forms using high-fire porcelain and stoneware.


The workshop consists of daily demonstrations, studio work, slide lectures and group discussions.


Tyler Lotz received his M.F.A. from Alfred University and is a professor at Illinois State University. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including venues in Chicago, Scottsdale, Philadelphia, Aspen, Korea and France.

Exhibition at UIS Springfield

The University of Illinois Springfield Visual Arts Gallery is pleased to present “Oblique Frontiers”, an exhibition of ceramic works from artist Tyler Lotz. The exhibit will open on Thursday, January 19 and run through Thursday, February 16. A reception will take place on Thursday, January 26 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
